Lake Life

Double-crested cormorants glide across the water, as egrets and herons tip-toe along the banks. Bass and catfish splash in the distance. Canoes and kayaks paddle peacefully by, while the sound of an Evinrude engine signals skiers nearby. Morning on the lake is a symphony of sound and grace.

Named Okoni (“Great Water”) by the Creek Indians who once inhabited this area, the pristine waters now forming Lake Oconee are enjoyed to this day with a deep respect for their tranquility and unspoiled beauty.

With 374 miles of shoreline and over 19,000 acres, Oconee is the second largest lake in Georgia. Tucked into the rolling hills of the Georgia Piedmont, Lake Oconee is centrally located between Augusta, Macon, and Atlanta.

Its waters stretch nearly 20 miles between Oconee National Forest and Milledgeville, beckoning visitors year round with some of the best bass fishing and water sports Georgia has to offer.
